The 2023-24 European Champions Cup celebrates its 10th season as an annual club rugby tournament. It features teams from the top five nations in European rugby along with the exciting addition of South Africa. Always promises to deliver some of the most exhilarating rugby matches worldwide!
This season showcased the top 8 teams from the Premiership Rugby (England) and the top 8 from the Top 14 (France), along with 4 teams from Ireland, 2 from South Africa, one from Scotland, and one from Wales. It has been a season filled with unexpected twists, exciting matches, and a ground-breaking inaugural final.
Let’s recap on the key moments from this years tournament
~ This is the second season that has featured South African teams in the mix, which adds an exciting dimension to the tournament; this year Bulls and Stormers both teams made it out of group staged making it to the final 16 but unfortunately for the Springbok supporters, Stormers did not proceed to the Quarters and Bulls lost their spot in the Semis to Northampton Saints.
~ Back-to-back champions La Rochelle faced runners-up Leinster in the pool stage for a highly anticipated opening clash with Leinster taking the upper hand this time round!
~ Thrilling knockout stages which saw underdogs like Harlequins' incredible comeback over Bordeaux-Bègles with an incredible 42-41 quarter-final victory. Before unfortunately being overcome by a motivated Toulouse team in the semi-finals ending in a 38 – 26 score to the French side.
~ The semi-finals which featured two European powerhouses: Leinster and Toulouse and specifically James Lowe’s hat-trick which propelled Leinster to a tight 20-17 victory over Northampton in front of a record-breaking crown 82,300 at Croke Park!
~ The ultimate final clash; Toulouse v Leinster - this is the first time these two European giants face off in the championship game, with Toulouse holding a record of 5 Champions Cup titles and Leinster close behind with 4.
